For women hiring a renovation contractor

You don’t owe a stranger a meeting in your kitchen.

You want to know who you’re letting into your home before you send your address. The Doorbell Rule gives you a written first approach: send the project details, ask specific questions and review the replies before inviting anyone over.

An introduction is not an invitation.

You ask about the work. The answer goes to the man beside you. You question an allowance and get reassurance instead of an explanation.

If you’re worried about the pink tax, being underestimated or feeling pressured in your own home, you deserve a different way to begin.

Start in writing. A contractor can respond to your project without standing in your kitchen while you decide what you think of the answer.

Two decisions. In this order.

Screen who gets in.
Plan how it could end.

Doorbell helps you assess candidates before home access. The Prenup helps you prepare the commitment, including what happens if you want the relationship to end.

The Doorbell Rule

Your general area. Not your street address.

The Doorbell Rule is a written pre-screen: send a project brief and request preliminary information before sharing your address or arranging a site visit.

The first-email example asks for line-item preliminary pricing, an indicative schedule, a sample contract and a sample change-order form. You review the replies first, then decide who belongs on the shortlist.

“Can you provide a line-item preliminary estimate from this scope, with an indicative start window and duration?”

“Can you send your sample contract and change-order form so I can see how you document changes?”

You do not need to announce that you live alone or explain why you are making the decisions yourself. Lead with the work and your expectations.

  • Start with 8–12 possible contractors
  • Adapt the first-email example
  • Compare what was answered or avoided
  • Use the printable candidate list

Written responses help you screen for fit and follow-through. They do not certify safety or financial stability; appropriate reference, insurance and other checks still matter.

The Contractor-Proof Prenup

What if you want them out halfway through?

Your kitchen is torn apart. The contractor has your deposit. You no longer want them working in your home, but you don’t know what ending the relationship would cost.

Your renovation needs a prenup. Work through how the relationship could end while you can still discuss the terms of beginning it.

Plan the end before you plan the beginning.

What happens to money already paid? How will unfinished work be recorded? What would someone else need to take over? The Prenup helps you prepare the questions, proposed terms and records behind those decisions.

Nobody hires a contractor hoping to fire them. You still deserve to know your way out.

Why these guides exist

Your renovation should not become the story you wish you could forget.

The deposit, the unfinished room, the feeling that asking another question will make things worse. Those are the moments these guides are written for.

I’ve spent thirty years in design and renovation as an interior designer, general contractor and owner’s representative, including work on seven-figure projects across North America. This is my life’s work, written down so you can use it on your own renovation.

I value contractors who do good work and care about the people living through it. Clear scope, agreed payment conditions and difficult conversations held early give that relationship something solid to work from.

I created Reno Mess Tribe to put the owner’s perspective within reach before you hand over your address, signature or deposit. You should not have to learn every lesson after something has gone wrong.

The Reno Mess Tribe newsletter

A contractor’s “quick question” can become your expensive answer.

Get the questions worth asking before you reply, approve a change or release another payment, plus updates on group and private support.

A few fair questions.

Do I need to know anything about construction?

No. The guides supply specific questions and wording, rather than leaving you to invent the questions yourself. Doorbell starts with the written approach; the Prenup goes deeper into responsibility, money, changes and ending the relationship. What a contractor answers, avoids or resists documenting tells you what needs further investigation.

Do I need both guides?

Use them in order. Doorbell helps you screen candidates before home access and an in-person sales pitch. The Prenup helps you prepare the detailed commitment and exit strategy. You can use the free guide without a purchase; when you move toward hiring, the Prenup is the next step in this process.

Is the Prenup a legal contract or a guarantee?

Neither. It helps you prepare your renovation prenup: the conditions and exit arrangements you want discussed, documented and professionally reviewed before committing.

If you want the contractor out halfway through, what would ending the relationship involve? What money could you still owe? How would unfinished work and the handover be accounted for? A qualified local lawyer needs to explain how your agreement and applicable law affect your options.

Can I book group or private support now?

Private options are 30 minutes for US$80 or 60 minutes for US$160, but bookings are not open yet. Join the newsletter for opening details and group-support announcements. The US$149 PDF does not include these services.

What is the refund policy?

The Prenup is a digital download. Review the contents and sample pages before purchasing; sales are final except where applicable law requires otherwise. Paid personal help is separate. If there is a problem accessing the file, reply to your purchase receipt for delivery help.

Start with a written answer, not a knock at the door.

Begin with the Doorbell screening approach. When you are ready to commit, prepare your Contractor-Proof Prenup.
